How to make your homemade conditioner for curly hair?

Recognize the needs of your hair

To make your DIY curly hair conditioner, we must start by understanding the specific needs of our hair. Indeed, curls may need to be nourished, strengthened or hydrated (or all three at the same time!).

ingredients for diy conditioner curly and frizzy hair

Curly, dry hair that needs hydration

Curly, dry hair needs water. They are recognized by certain characteristics or behaviors:

  • Curly and frizzy hair is often genetically dry. They have always lacked sebum (the natural hydration of the hair).
  • They will tend to have a lot of frizz, difficult to disentangle, and puff up at the slightest source of moisture.
  • In addition, they will lack shine and will have a rough and dull appearance.

In these cases, it will be necessary that your conditioner can hydrate your hair with water based ingredients such as Aloe Vera gel. But also maintain and protect the hydrolipidic film by nourishing your hair with vegetable oils, phytokeratin and / or essential oils.

Curly hair that needs nutrition

Curly hair that needs nutrition has often been weakened by external aggressions: straightening, coloring, discoloration or by the external environment: UV, pollution, chlorine, salt etc. Hair that lacks nutrition can be recognized because:

  • They are damaged, brittle, fragile, and tend to have split ends.
  • They lack shine.

To overcome this need, your conditioner for curly hair will need to be rich in vegetable oils and / or vegetable butter.

Curly hair that needs strengthening

Curly hair that needs strengthening is in lack protein and in particular keratin. This is the main constituent of the hair, which protects it, gives it flexibility and shine. However, with time and with external aggressions, the keratin decreases and the hair is found uncovered and therefore much more fragile. We recognize this need because:

  • Curly hair will be less flexible and more elastic. Therefore, they will break easily.
  • The curls will be less plump and they will have trouble forming well.

Proteins capable of penetrate into the hair fiber and strengthen curly hair are: rice and wheat proteins also called Phytokeratin. Provitamin B5 also helps strengthen the hair.

Complete guide to conditioner for curly hair

Here's a guide to the best ingredients to put in your DIY curly hair conditioner..

1 - Vegetable oils for curly hair

The best oils to incorporate into your homemade curly hair conditioner recipe are: Coconut, Castor, Mustard, Grape seed, Broccoli, Piqui, Sweet Almond, Yangu, Argan, Avocado, Baobab and Jojoba oil. Know that coconut oil is the oil that penetrates the best in the hair fiber. It also helps to strengthen the hydrolipidic film. Therefore, it deeply nourishes and maintains the hydration of your hair.

2 - vegetable butters

If your hair is lacking in nutrition, curly, frizzy, or afro in nature, plant butters will be your best allies in your conditioner recipe for curly hair. Shea butter is the most common because it is very efficient and the cheapest. But be aware that mango butter or cocoa butter are also very nutritious.

Be careful, however, vegetable butters are very fatty. Therefore they are not recommended for fine hair or hair with low hair density. In addition, use them in small quantities in your conditioner and prefer them as a pre-shampoo.

3 - moisturizing ingredients

There are few ingredients with moisturizing properties that can be directly incorporated into its DIY conditioner for curly hair. The best ingredient for deep hydration without leaving your hair greasy isaloe vera. Sold in gel form, it will promote hydration thanks to its 98% water content. In addition, thanks to its film-forming properties, it will strengthen the hydrolipidic film and effectively slow down the evaporation of water.

Be careful, choose a very highly concentrated aole vera gel (the first ingredient in the INCI list must be "aloe vera") and which has not been denatured. We recommend you aloe vera gel from Bioflore in 100ml (or in 250ml).

Please note: : Know that hydration goes first and foremost internally. So don't hesitate to drink lots of water during the day! In addition, vegetable oils help strengthen hair, restore the hydrolipidic film and therefore maintain hydration. If your hair is dehydrated, do not hesitate to bathe in oils or to combine active moisturizer + active nutrition in your conditioner.

4 - Proteins and vitamins

Keratin, the main component of hair, degrades over time and over time and external attacks on the hair. This loss will have to be compensated by hydrolyzed proteins which will penetrate effectively into the hair fiber. These vegetable proteins are: rice protein and wheat protein otherwise called Phytokeratin. Indeed, phytokeratin is used in conditioners to strengthen the intercellular cement and thus prevent water loss. Thus it glues together the scales of the hair and restores suppleness and shine. This ingredient is also great if you're struggling to tame your curls and want them to be more structured.

Finally, know that your hair is often lacking in vitamins and in particular Provitamin B5 (or panthenol) which is however essential in the beauty of the hair. This vitamin strengthens, strengthens, sheaths, hair and makes it shinier and easier to comb. All this without greasing or weighing them down. Finally, the Vitamin E is a powerful anti-aging active, reduces frizz and gives shine to dull and coarse hair. Plus, it's a great natural preservative for your homemade curly hair conditioner.

5 - essential oils for curly hair

Essential oils have many virtues for taking care of curls and maintaining the hydrolipidic film. You can incorporate them into your conditioner recipe for curly hair but be careful to always respect the recommended dosage. They should not exceed 1% of the total of your preparation. In addition, they are strongly discouraged in children under 12 and pregnant women and some people are intolerant.

The best essential oils for curly hair are: Ginger, Petit Grain Bigarade, Macadamia, Basil, True Lavender, Rosemary or Ylang-Ylang. These EO, in addition to doing good to your hair, will naturally maintain your curls.
