We will explain to you today why you have oily hair after your brazilian straightening. Then we will see that if it lasts over time, there is solutions to remove this sticky effect after a Brazilian straightening.

Why does your Brazilian straightening make your hair sticky?

sticky hair after brazilian straightening

First of all, what is Brazilian smoothing (LB)? It should more commonly be called " brazilian keratin treatment“, Since it involves injecting keratin-based care products into the hair. It is therefore not a straightening. This is to temporarily smooth the hair fiber (4 to 8 months). Keratin is the main element that makes up the hair. It makes them strong, shiny and supple. The Brazilian smoothing therefore allows the keratin to penetrate and fix in the hair fiber by a chemical process to smooth, strengthen and repair damaged hair.

Sticky hair a few hours or days after Brazilian straightening

Brazilian smoothing contains chemical components that will help to fix keratin inside the hair scales. However, this process takes time, which is why you must leave the product to act for 3 days minimum. Your hair must therefore be kept away from any source of humidity or water during this time. And for some of you it's the drama because after doing your brazilian straightening your hair is sticky, oily, heavy and sticky.

So, why this sticky effect?

  • When leaving the hairdresser or after making a homemade kit, there is always some product left on your hair! The 3 days of water weaning thus allow the keratin to penetrate deeply into the scales because it needs time to soak up. And this excess product on the hair creates a sticky layer on your roots which are overloaded. Right after a Brazilian straightening, it is therefore normal to have sticky hair.
  • After 3 days, you can rinse off the excess keratin and remove that oily and sticky appearance. Attention, now when rinsing you should use a sulfate-free shampoo because the latter is the sworn enemy of keratin. It may cancel the treatment for you.
  • 3 days after your Brazilian straightening, you should therefore find smooth and shiny hair. Be aware that it sometimes takes a while to regain its volume. However, if your hair remains sticky after these 72 hours and after having properly washed and rinsed it, the problem may be more annoying as we will see now.

Greasy hair constantly and for several weeks after your Brazilian straightening

If you still have sticky, sticky hair after several weeks and several shampoos, you may have a bigger problem. This can come from several factors:

  • Overdose when applying brazilian edging can make your hair sticky for several weeks.
  • An application of product on the roots when you already have oily hair. Indeed, a Brazilian smoothing tends to amplify this effect.
  • A scalp that has reacted badly to Brazilian straightening may be the cause. You may be intolerant to a compound present in the care.
  • If you have made it at home, the Brazilian straightening used does not suit you. Discover in our last part the best Brazilian straightening kits.
  • Finally and always in case you have done your homemade Brazilian straightening, check that you have done a real Brazilian smoothing. To recognize this, the first indicator is the pause time. If it is less than 3 days, it is simply a classic treatment with keratin in large quantities but which does not fix it like a Brazilian straightening. And a treatment applied too long to the roots is never good.

In all cases, if your hair is sticky and oily after Brazilian straightening remain for several weeks and after a fortnight of washing, we advise you to call a hairdresser to help you find a personalized solution.

Hello I did my Brazilian straightening in a salon I washed it 3 days after Maos the problem is that after washing my hair several days two days after Max three it becomes hyper oily very very oily I do not know how to do it suddenly I have to wash them every two days I'm fed up

    1. Green Lilac

      Hello,
You didn't have a tendency to have oily hair before Brazilian straightening? Unfortunately, it happens that the products used in Brazilian straightening change the nature of the hair and that they tend to become oily. First, try to check with the hairdressing salon where you shampooed and ask to analyze the composition to see the quality of the product used. For example, did it contain real keratin or a substitute? What is its formalin content? If the product was of poor quality, it may unfortunately be that the hair bulbs have been attacked and damaged by the product and that in response to protect themselves they produce sebum and therefore fat. In this case, you just have to wait before the hair regains its balance.

It also happens that the hair is more oily simply because it is extremely nourished and therefore is healthier than before (if you tended to have dry hair and dry roots). In this case, readjust your hair routine by taking shampoo and care that is gentle and not very nourishing, that is to say for normal hair.

Hope to have helped you! Let us know if your problem resolves!

  2. Marion

I have oily hair and indeed since the Brazilian straightening my hair is sticky directly after the shampoo (so much so that sometimes I feel obliged to have to tie them so it shows…) The hairdresser told me that it was going to go away after several shampoos. My question is as follows: the more often I shampoo the more the sticky side will go away? Or do you just have to be patient and try to space out the shampoos anyway so as not to damage the hair and the Brazilian straightening?

    Thank you for your help,

    Marion

    1. Green Lilac

      Hello Marion,
Note that two phenomena occur just after a Brazilian straightening:
      – Your scalp is much more nourished than usual, which can cause permanent over-greasing at first.
      – The new shampoo you are using is sulfate-free. In addition to being less stripping than usual, your hair may need time to adapt to get used to and tolerate the new surfactants (agents that allow washing).

To answer your question more concretely: it is therefore preferable to be patient because repeatedly shampooing can, on the contrary, aggravate the situation (irritation of the scalp which causes more sebum and therefore more oil). Note that you can still shampoo every 2 days, then space out as you go, when your hair no longer has this sticky appearance (this should not last more than 2-3 weeks). If after this time your hair is still sticky, you should go back to your hairdresser to have a shampoo slightly more stripping but still suitable for straightening.

Also note that if you have changed shampoo or care products (pre-shampoo, conditioner or mask), it may not be suitable for your hair and in this case, if despite all your efforts l If the stickiness does not go away, you should try another shampoo or other products to try to find one that suits you.

Good luck, and don't hesitate to come back to me for more advice or more details.
